About the Museum
11,500 sq. mt. of memory, resilience, and hope — spread across seven immersive blocks chronicling the story of the 2001 Kutch earthquake and Gujarat's extraordinary rebirth.
From the earth's geological evolution to Gujarat's topography and its vulnerabilities — from the devastating aftermath of the 2001 Kutch Earthquake to Gujarat's saga of extraordinary rebuilding — to finally paying digital homage to every soul lost. All experienced through artifacts, immersive art, and virtual simulations.
In 2024, Smritivan became the first museum in India to receive the prestigious UNESCO Prix Versailles Award — recognised among the world's most beautiful museums.
Each block takes you deeper into the story of the 2001 earthquake. Explore each space in 360° — or take the full immersive tour across all seven galleries.
“Smritivan is not just a memorial — it is a symbol of the indomitable spirit of Gujarat, a testament to how a society rises from devastation and transforms tragedy into triumph.”
The state-of-the-art memorial and museum were inaugurated on 28 August 2022. The memorial carries the names of nearly 13,000 people who lost their lives — paying tribute to the lost, while celebrating the perseverance of the people of Kutch.
