Earthquake

India's 52nd Republic Day turned into one of the most tragic days in the country's history. At 8:46 AM, an earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale — with a maximum felt intensity of X (Extreme) on the Mercalli scale — struck the city of Bhuj in Gujarat's Kutch district. The devastation was akin to a war zone: lives, homes, temples, and livelihoods wiped away within seconds.

It was the worst disaster to strike India since independence in 1947.

Rebuilding

The rebuilding that followed the 2001 earthquake is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the people of Kutch. Within a single decade, the region transformed from rubble into a thriving economic powerhouse — a transformation that set a global benchmark in post-disaster reconstruction.

The Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) was established immediately after the earthquake to lead the reconstruction and rehabilitation effort, becoming a model institution for disaster response worldwide.

The
Dream

Smritivan — meaning "Forest of Memories" — was the dream project of then Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi. His vision was to create a living memorial that would not only honour the nearly 13,000 souls lost but also celebrate the extraordinary resilience and rebuilding spirit of the people of Kutch.

Inaugurated on 28th August 2022 by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Smritivan now stands as a 170-acre sanctuary of memory, ecology, and renewal atop the historically significant Bhujiyo Dungar in Bhuj — a beacon of hope rising from the ruins of 2001.
